"On Sunday the 14th I was booked into the big money league Rushmoor league at Gold Valley. For those of you that don't know the Rushmoor league is made up of 9 teams of 10 anglers. With 90 people fishing there are a few poor draws to say the least! The league runs every year due to the fantastic pay outs. Nearly every match guarantees £1000 per round to the winner so it attracts a high number of high quality anglers.

"On the morning of the match everyone was speculating as to where the winner would come from with 85 on middle being the favoured draw. I was given my peg, 100 on middle, I didn't know what to expect as the peg hasn't been used in the matches lately but it was end peg on the day and once I got to my peg I really fancied it! The peg consisted of a long margin into a corner at the central rope reachable with the pole. I decided to keep it very simple and fish pellets on both lines.

"For the 16m line I set up a 4x14 Carp Grey Series 1 float on 0.16 Lo-Viz mainline to a 0.12 hooklength of the same material, hook choice was a T93-13 in size 16. The margin set up was exactly the same apart from the float size being a light 4x12. Elastic choice was doubled up 6-8 Hi-Viz.

"The whistle went and I shipped out to 16m and tapped out 10 4mm pellets out and lowered the rig in. About 5 minutes later I was attached to my first carp, I was hoping this was a sign of things to come! After the first hour and by feeding very gingerly I had 6 carp in the net for around 40lb. People were saying the complex was fishing very poorly due to the cold snap so I was on course. It was then a case of nicking odd fish from the 16m swim for the next hour or so. Thing started to slow up so I decided to plumb a new swim up to the right of where I was fishing and primed it with another 10 pellets. Before I tried this line I had a quick look down the edge, 3 quick fish had me excited but it then died. Back out to 16m on the new line another run of 3 fish was extremely helpful before it died completely. For the last hour I concentrated on the edge swim which gave me another 4-5 fish. At the end of the match everyone was saying I had comfortably won but with £1000 up for grabs I didn't like to speculate!

"It became apparent the venue had fished poorly and the scales revealed my weight at 101lb. That was more than enough for the win with 69lb being second. It was a great draw with obviously a lot of fish in residence. But by fishing sensibly for a fish at a time I feel I got what I could from the peg. All in all a fantastic day with the added bonus of taking £1120 home!"
