Middy's team of sponsored anglers went head-to-head at Rycroft Fishery in Derbyshire on Friday 4th May for the first annual Middy Match Team Cup, with a top prize of 500 pounds, as well as the trophy. A total of 20 anglers spread out over the venue's Moat and Clover lakes and everybody caught well across the five hours. Ashley Clements, who was sponsored by Middy in December 2011, finished in first place with 138lb 2oz. Runners-up included:

2nd - Simon Skelton (100lb 14oz)
3rd - Steve Haywood (98lb 13oz)
4th - Pete Upperton (85lb 5oz)
5th - Jamie Wilde (79lb)
6th - Anthony King (73lb 8oz)
7th - Marc Rodger (71lb 3oz)
8th - Graham Dack (70lb 10oz)

Middy's team co-ordinator Craig Butterfield witnessed the action as it unfolded:

"On peg 18 on Moat, Simon Skelton got off to a great start. Fishing meat at 14.5m, the Leicestershire ace took several small carp to take a commanding early lead. Over on Clover, Ashley Clements had finally started to find a few fish but was somewhat behind Simon and Joe Oakes, who had now started to find a few better fish from his corner peg on Clover.

"Fish were beginning to be caught all around the lakes and it was hard to call who was in the lead. It was clear to see that it was going to be a close match. With Simon going through a quiet spell the rest of the pack had gained on him and Ashley was now putting fish in his net with match-winning regularity.

"Going into the last hour it was too close to call - it seemed that it was between Simon and Ashley but with Pete Upperton starting to catch in the margins on Clover and Steve Haywood catching proper fish to double figures on Moat, it looked like one of those two could come from the back to steal it, but was there enough time to make the necessary impact?

"When the match ended it was impossible to call. Everyone suspected that Ashley had done enough to win, but with Steve Haywood putting four fish of over 30lb in his net in the last half hour, it was going to be a tense weigh in.

"With Steve Haywood weighing 98lb 13oz and Simon just pipping him with 100lb 14oz Ashley would need to break the ton to take victory. That he did and with some to spare, as his catch pulled the scales round to 138lb 2oz.

"Ashley's winning tactics on the day saw him start off targeting the edge of a sunken island at 13 metres on meat, before missed bites saw him move out another metre to fish onto of the island in 4 feet of water. Banded pellet on the hook with 8mm's fired over the top saw a steady stream of carp come after 10 minutes."

Ashley explained, "my biggest fish was about 7lb so I used doubled 6-8 Middy Hi-Viz elastic, which was perfect for the size of fish I was catching. I did try shallow a couple of times but the fish were much more comfortable feeding on the bottom. I used a 4x12 Middy Grey Series 1 float and most of my bites came just as the float settled. If I didn't have a bite after a minute I just fed a couple more pellets and dropped my rig back through the water. I fished relatively light using 0.16 Middy Lo-Viz line to a 0.12 hooklength as I felt the thinner diameter hooklength gave a more natural fall as my hook bait settled."

Middy MD David Middleton was quick to congratulate Ashley and present him with the 500 pounds cheque. "Ashley fished a brilliant match and to come out on top against some of the country's best match anglers is a credit to his ability. We're already making plans to make next year's match even bigger."
