Middy-backed angler Simon Skelton - the current County Champion - has qualified for the Match This final.

One of three remaining places was competed for on Saturday at Larford Lakes (Stourport) and Simon bagged 135lb 12oz from peg 44 on Arena to win the match. He joins the UK Champion Marc Rodger amongst Middy anglers who've qualified for the final on 31st August.

Simon was a little wary before the start. "I knew nothing about the lake and there were mixed feelings from those who fish it regularly - some saying it wouldn't fish well and others saying it was where the winner would come from. When I got to the peg I fancied it, but the wind was blowing the other way."

This had little bearing on his success, however, as he started at 5m with paste and had three fish in the first 20 minutes for 25lb, one being about 18lb.

After that, it went quiet. "It was then that I tried method out in front of me with groundbait and maggot and I had a few on this. At the same time I was priming my edge with groundbait, and maggot at 16m to the next platform. After 2 hours, I had a look down there and had one carp of about 5lb. It was slow but I kept filling it in and picking off the odd fish. This is when I started to build a weight, as they were pushing 6-8lb per fish. I was putting two big pots of groundbait per fish and fishing a worm on the hook. I also had three fish on method on my 5m line while I was letting my edge line settle."

When the final whistle blew, Simon was confident. "I thought I had between 120lb and 130lb so knew I had probably won my lake and I'd heard that Speci Lake had fished hard with no more than 90lb winning that, but I knew a really big weight might have come off Match Lake. When I heard that the top weight was just over 131lb, I couldn't believe it and wouldn't until they called my name out."

The 131lb 2oz was bagged by Middy-backed Pete Upperton, who narrowly misses out on a place in the final.

Simon continued, "I am still over the moon and really looking forward to the final as it will be a great opportunity and, you never know, it could be my day. Fingers crossed."

Middy would like to congratulate Simon on this achievement and wish him, and Marc, luck for the final. Congratulations to Pete as well, for coming so close!
