Pete Upperton wins MMTC
22 JUNE 2015
Pete retains his title with back-to-back wins...
Friday 19th June 2015 saw 21 of the country's best match anglers at Shearsby Valley Lakes fishery in Leicestershire for the Middy Match Team Cup. The match is only for Middy sponsored anglers and is a chance for the team to meet up and have a bit of a social, although if you think it's a friendly affair you'd be very much mistaken. Hours of preparation, practice sessions and effort had gone into the previous few weeks as each angler wants to walk off with not only the cup and the £500 first prize, but also the bragging rights for the next 12 months.

With few anglers knowing the venue everyone was unsure where the best place to draw would be, although based on previous years anywhere near Pete Upperton was usually a good guide that you would be on a few! The draw saw Pete draw the end peg, with Jimmy Brooks opposite him on the other end peg, and Chris Cameron and Davie Corcoran on the two at the other end. But would the fish be at the ends?

Lee Thornton and Kieron Rich seem inseparable these days! And even after traveling down together they then decided to spend the next 5 hours next to each other in the widest area of the lake, but would the fish be there?

Conditions were far from ideal and with the fish preparing to spawn it was always going to be a tough match, but all fears seemed to be squashed as time was called and soon elastic was seen coming from several anglers poles. Davie Corcoran had a fish in the net before some anglers had even begun fishing and Steve Haywood was like a man possessed with over 20lb in the first half hour.

Unfortunately the fish suddenly shut up shop and the next few hours were really tough for most; it turned into a game of cat and mouse, as fish cruised about in pairs, seemingly impossible to catch.

Two anglers were finding a few though as after a quiet first two hours a battle and began to develop between Pete Upperton and Jimmy Brooks, who despite being opposite each other were actually unable to see each other due to a small island. To say there were a few lies being told was a bit of an understatement! No two anglers in the history of match angling have ever caught so many fish while their estimated weights remained unchanged!

After 5 tough hours for most, time was called and everyone knew it was a two horse race - although a horse could probably judge weight better than these two since they both claimed to have a rather conservative 30lbs! Luckily the scales don't lie and it wasn't as close as we thought...

For the second year running Pete Upperton took the title, the cup and the money, with 107lbs to Jimmy Brooks' 76lbs 12oz. The performance of the day had to go to young star Ross MacAuley, who grabbed 3rd and doubled the anglers around him with a fine display of long pole meat fishing.

Results:
1st Pete Upperton 107lb
2nd Jimmy Brooks 76lb 12oz
3rd Ross Macauley 66lb 8oz
4th Harry Bignell 48lb 2oz
5th Craig Goldstraw 45lb 8oz
