MMTC 2016 Report
25 JULY 2016
Jordan Hall wins the 2016 Middy Match Team Cup!

Lake View Fishery in Melton Mowbray welcomed the fifth annual Middy Match Team Cup event, with the Middy sponsored anglers fishing on River and Stream pools for the trophy and a £500 reward.

On a very warm and still day, some were greeted with plenty of the larger fish already up in the water and ready to assess any attempts at mugging in the bright sunshine. Those not fortunate enough to draw these areas would be looking to put together a weight of F1s if they were in feeding mode. With no recognisable wind on the water, it would be difficult to call a winner, and with the accomplished ability present, even post draw there were no clear favourites.

With none of this Middy task force really knowing Lake View, it would be made even more interesting - a test of their skills on a venue which can be notoriously difficult.

Jimmy Brooks on River 1 started in his usual whirlwind fashion, soon putting 15lb together shipping to the island on pellet. Most anglers had bites early and put a few fish in their nets until things settled down and the graft started! It was Jordan Hall who then emerged as the early leader, as Jimmy's peg soon settled down.

Jordan on River 12 was having good early success mugging some good fish using long pole, long line and caster and capitalising on the shade offered from the trees at his end of the lake. A brave start as he ran the risk of spooking the fish round to Lee Thornton on the next peg, River 9. Throwing caution to the wind Jordan continued to skilfully take good fish and was soon up to 60lb, leaving most in his wake.

With the F1s not really wanting to feed with any conviction and the fish generally difficult to catch in the bright conditions, Jordan was looking hard to beat. Jimmy started to gather pace utilising his margins and Lee Thornton's peg was beginning to deliver, but after he lost a 10lb fish at the net, any challenge to Jordan was disappearing. Was Pete Upperton, winner for the last two years, a realistic contender on Stream 9? A late run of quality fish was always a possibility on peg that does win matches, but with a committed margin attack it didn't deliver, so a battle for a lake win would be the only prize.

However it was Ashley Clements and Chris Kendall who claimed the lake prizes, first and second respectively on Stream with Pete Upperton just off the pace with 63lb 10oz.

Back on River with Jordan now catching on caster shallow, it was all over! Just to secure victory Jordan had big potted his margins and a switch to double worm saw another quality fish in his keepnet. Unstoppable!! A good peg on the day, but a great performance from Jordan and a worthy winner displaying quality commercial fishery angling on an unfamiliar venue, catching 131lb 5oz.

Jimmy Brooks put together over 100lb, enough to stay ahead of Ashley Clements, as well as fourth place Lee Thornton who finished second on River by default.

The pre-match predictions and the usual form of River and Stream for a close match was turned on its head a little, but it still remained a good match and hopefully some lessons learnt on an unfamiliar venue, even if some anglers left bemused by the Lake View fish and their approach to feeding!

Also a mention of Thomas Mille, who made the journey from France to compete and hopefully left a little wiser on commercial venues in the UK.

Congratulations to Jordan, the 2016 MMTC Champion, and well done to all those competing. The announcement of next year's venue is eagerly anticipated.
