Werrett's Winter Wonderland
16 MARCH 2017
Lee Werrett has had an excellent winter campaign...

My winter campaign started at Tunnel Barn on the Angling Trust winter league, we were quietly confident of doing well and qualifying for the winter league final on Decoy and the drains.

The league is fished in five rounds over eight weeks, spread over the complex at Tunnel Barn. Weights this year have been down on previous years, but that's down to the weather.

In the first round I fished new pool (this is probably my favourite lake) – and won the section and the match with 68lb of big F1s and the team won the day as well.

The 2nd round I drew a great peg on extension and again won the section and 4th in the match, with 52lb all on maggots - the team won again on the day to put us in a great position.

I drew peg 5 on extension in the 3rd round, a non-descript peg really with not much form. I didn't really fancy it because you are set back further than everyone else and that is how it turned out, coming 3rd in section with just over 20lb (again all on maggots).

I had to miss the fourth round but in the fifth I drew a peg which has been consistently poor, in the shape of peg 29 on extension. Somehow I managed to win the section with just 18lb! The team won the day and also the league to qualify us for the final at Decoy.

I've also fished the Viaduct winter league - this is probably one of the biggest leagues around these days, with 19 teams of five fishing over all the lakes at Viaduct. For me it's been a poor league with some indifferent draws, but that's winter fishing. The only chance I really had, draw wise, was the last round where we going into it with a slender 1pt lead and a very close chasing pack.

I think any of the top five teams going into the last round could have won it, which makes it more exciting as no-one is running away with it. I drew a peg on Campbell in the middle of the lake. These matches are 19 peg sections so I had to do the best for the team. We had possibly one of the best draws in the hat but you still have to make the most of them!

I started slowly without a fish in the first hour and, just when you start to think 'here we go again', the tip went round and fish number one was on its way. 14 more followed over the course of the 5 hours, to weigh 116lb for a section win and match win!

Phone calls started to come in - how the lads had done? "I've got 15pts", "I've got 14pts", "I've got 19pts"… Getting back to the draw we worked out we had possibly 68-70 points. Would this be enough?

It turned out it was and we won the league by 4 points. Very tight, a mammoth effort by everyone considering the diversity of the fishing and the pegs that are used. I'm very pleased to have finally won this one, we finished 2nd last year so made up for it.

Tight lines,
Lee Werrett
